GRAVEL MINING:
Board Member Paul Yelsma has reported that State Bills 429-431 on gravel mining are still in House Committee after the Chairperson received over 400 emails of protest from concerned citizens. These bills were written by the gravel mining industry to remove all local oversight and control over gravel mining operations. The Bills will likely be presented again in the fall. Paul encouraged members to be ready to write letters, emails and or phone calls to Representatives, URGING LOCAL CONTROL so that local Townships can oversee and control gravel mining operations. If the bills pass, mining companies could be free to work on Sundays, work long hours, have many trucks per day creating a lot of dust that can travel in the air up to 1 ½ miles from the work site, and cause loud, noise pollution. A sample email and contacts can be found here.
Help CONTROL the spread of AIS— What can DCLA Members do:
Attend Prairieville Township Parks and Recreation board meetings and express your support for a collaborative and funded UCL boat wash station. The meetings are every 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Prairieville Township Offices.
Consider being a boat wash station volunteer! Both adult and student volunteers will be paid stipends (to be determined based on the amount of funds available) An adult supervisor(s) is needed when student volunteers are present. Community service hours for students can be gained and documented.
Donate to DCLA above and beyond your membership dues to pay for stipends for volunteer staffing at the UCL boat wash station.
Do your part to educate yourself and others regarding clean boats, clean waters for years and years to come!
Inspect and clean your boat and holding tanks before entering and leaving Crooked Lake.
There are several methods for preventing the spread of AIS in Michigan lakes. The DCLA Board has researched resources and educational materials in order to stay abreast of effective options, including the Michigan AIS Boating Laws, Michigan State University Clean Boats Clean Waters Program, Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program, and Michigan Chapter North American Lake Management Society Lake Research Grants Program.
DCLA has added a Winter Bulletin for members. The Winter Bulletin is sent via email to the majority of DCLA Members. If you did not receive the inaugural 2023 edition, a hard copy format can be found here.
